European Linen
Our search for a more sustainable wardrobe has led us to linen, a heritage fibre that promotes naturalness, health, and well-being.
Linen is gentle on both our skin and the environment. In fact, when produced with ecologically sensitive practices, it is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics. Linen is naturally absorbent, highly breathable, and insulating, keeping us cool in summer and comfortable in winter. Its antibacterial qualities make it perfect for sensitive skin.
However, you will discover that not all linen is the same. The quality of the finished fabric, its texture and durability depend on the length and strength of the plant (called flax), as well as on the harvesting methods and thoughtful manufacturing techniques learned over generations.
Our linen is made of local, naturally sustainable crops that require minimal irrigation and chemical treatment, and are cultivated using a rotation system that favors biodiversity.
For complete transparency in the supply chain, we work directly with the weaver, an almost 100-year-old flax mill in Europe and a member of the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp, which oversees the fiber’s development from plant to finished product. All their members follow best practices, so the flax remains GMO-free, creates zero waste, and doesn’t alter the soil or rivers.
The substances used when weaving, dyeing, or softening the fabric are in compliance with the European Union's REACH regulation and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX, which means they have been tested and are safe for human health and the environment.
The finished fabric is prewashed to feel gentle on your skin and prevent any shrinkage in the future. It has a lovely radiant fullness, a beautiful drape, and a relaxed texture that requires minimal ironing.
We believe that carefully crafted linen is an expression of discrete, sustainable luxury. It blends freshness, comfort, and ease. And it pleasantly reminds us of our connection with the natural world.
A final note: one of the images above shows a field of flax, the blue-flowered plant that linen is made of. It was kindly sent to us by a flax cultivator in Normandy, whom we had the pleasure of visiting in 2019.
